Joint Media Release | Coalition Welcomes Closer Ties With Fiji | 06 July 2026

July 6, 2026

JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT
Monday 6 July 2026
COALITION WELCOMES CLOSER TIES WITH FIJI

The Coalition welcomes the signing of the Vuvale Union Treaty and the Ocean of Peace Alliance with Fiji which builds on the Vuvale Partnership first signed under the former Coalition Government.

These agreements reflect the deep and enduring ties between Australia and Fiji, built over many decades.

The Coalition is particularly pleased to see the Ocean of Peace Alliance establish a framework for a more regionally focused security pact, which we have recently been advocating for.

Australia’s partnership with Fiji is built on mutual benefit, shared interests and history, deep people-to-people links and a common stake in the future of the region.

The signing follows the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs’ own recent visit to Papua New Guinea and Fiji, reflecting the Coalition’s strong commitment to our Pacific relationships and our call for a return to bipartisanship on Pacific policy.

These agreements build on a bipartisan legacy of deepening our ties with the Pacific family.

The Coalition has a proud record of delivery in the Pacific including major contributions through the Pacific Step-up, the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, labour mobility reforms, the Coral Sea Cable and support for regional telecommunications connectivity.

The Coalition will seek a briefing on the agreements from the Government in coming weeks.
