Topics: returning ISIS Bride, Labor’s widow tax, One Nation votes with the Greens and Teals
E&OE…………………………………………………………………………………………

SENATOR JAMES PATERSON: Well, another day, another set of excuses from the Albanese Labor government about why they can't keep Australians safe. This morning it was Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke's turn when he popped up on radio in a tortured interview to explain why he couldn't do anything to stop the remaining so called ISIS bride from returning to Australia despite the fact that she had a Temporary Exclusion Order applied to her. This is a government which frankly just hasn't had its heart in protecting Australia from this dangerous cohort of people. The government should have used every single lever at its power to keep these people offshore and they have failed to do so. We know some of those so called ISIS brides who have return to Australia have now been charged with horrific crimes including crimes against humanity, including trafficking in slaves, trafficking in their fellow human beings. These are people who have no place in Australia and should have been kept offshore.

Secondly, we've learned this morning yet another shocking revelation about Jim Chalmers' broken promise to increase taxes on Australia. As if it wasn't bad enough already, now the Albanese Labor government is proposing to tax widows. There is nothing this government won't tax. But a couple who has a negatively geared investment property is going to face higher taxes if one of them dies in the future. This is absolutely callous and cruel and it should be fixed before the government tries to rush the legislation through the Senate tonight.

Just finally, One Nation's David Farley has got himself into a real pickle this week. He voted with the Greens and the Teals to overturn the diesel fuel rebate, which is critically relied on by our farmers and our miners and others. He voted to cap that and for the proceeds to be spent on increased renewables. And when he was first challenged on this he said that he did not make a mistake. Now he's subsequently admitted, that after he had had a talking to by Pauline Hanson, that maybe he did make a mistake and I think he's clearly misled the Australian people with his original explanation. If One Nation has this much trouble managing just one member of the House of Representatives, who's now contradicted their party on three occasions over immigration, flags, and now fuel rebates, how on earth do they propose to form government after the next election? How on earth does Pauline Hanson propose to be Prime Minister from the Senate? She would have to control 76 members of the House of Representatives at least, when she can't even keep one under control currently.

Thank you.
