Today the Coalition will introduce a Bill to the Senate to protect Australia’s defence heritage from the Albanese Government's fire sale.
This Bill will give Parliament the power to block the sale of strategic and historically significant defence assets by the government of the day.
The Bill requires a government that wishes to sell a military base to issue an instrument which can be disallowed by either House.
If passed, the Senate could block the government’s decision to sell off a defence site, such as Victoria Barracks Sydney, HMAS Penguin, Lancer Barracks, Victoria Barracks Melbourne, or Irwin Barracks, among others.
The Bill will also require the Minister for Defence to table a statement in Parliament justifying why a divestment decision of a defence estate asset is in the national interest.
Richard Marles is selling off the family silver because his government refuses to adequately fund Defence. It is time the Parliament intervened and put a stop to this fire sale.
More than 108,000 Australians have signed a petition to stop Labor’s defence estate fire sale, which has attracted opposition from across the political spectrum.
Our military heritage belongs to all Australians. It belongs to the ANZACs. It belongs to our veterans alive today. It is not the plaything of a political party.
